In this episode, I talk with Shane Simpson and his friend Ryan Carpenter about blood trailing deer. Shane has a tracking dog and gets a lot more tracking experience than the average hunter by using his dog to help hunters that have put marginal shots on deer. Throughout these experiences tracking deer, Shane kept data about every track that he went on. His friend Ryan, organized the data to show what can increase your odds of finding deer that you shoot. We discuss these factors to hopefully help you have better success shooting and tracking deer!

This episode is part 2 of the stories that were told by viewers/listeners that we met at last weeks garage sale that we had in Iowa. Ever since I can remember, my Dad and our friend Rich Meyer have spent time hunting together every year at some sort of hunting camp. I was lucky to have many great hunting mentors as a kid and along with my grandpas and dad I was also greatly influenced by the guys at camp. Before I was old enough to tag along with my dad and his friends, I couldn't wait for him to come home and tell me the stories of everything that happened on their trip. Eventually when I was 12 years old, I started tagging along with them on their annual deer and turkey hunting trips and couldn't wait for the next one. Over the years I learned a ton from those guys and I'll never forget the memories we made. In this episode, Doug, Rich, and I talk about some of our best stories from the days that we spent at camp and some of the things we learned hunting together.

Throughout our bowhunting careers all of us at THP have experimented with mechanical broadheads. In this episode, Aaron, Greg, Ranch Fairy, and I talk about our experiences shooting mechanical broadheads and what bad experiences ultimately made us change back to shooting fixed broadheads with heavier arrows. Along with our own personal experiences, we also talk about how we watched countless videos of deer being shot by the Midwest Whitetail prostaff with mechanical broadheads when editing footage when we worked there. After watching hundreds of shots frame by frame we learned a lot about the potential problems that mechanical broadheads can have. We hope that by talking about our experiences we can help others become more successful archery hunters.

Steve Demarais and Bronson Strickland are professors at Mississippi State University. There, a team of faculty and graduate students make up the MSU Deer Ecology and Management Lab. Through many research projects Steve and Bronson have learned a ton about whitetail deer and their behaviors. In this episode, Aaron and I were able to have a long conversation with Steve and Bronson about some of the things that have learned that will help all of us as hunters and land managers. We met Bruce Hall last turkey season and hunted with him for the first time this past week in Wisconsin. Bruce has some awesome stories from his travels hunting across the country. In this episode, Jake and I talk to Bruce about some of his wild adventures that include getting bit by a rattlesnake, getting stranded in the middle of nowhere, and some of the things he has learned hunting in so many new areas over the years. Sam Soholt is a long time friend of THP. Sam and his brother Josh are huge advocates for public land and over the years he has built some of the best mobile hunting camps that I have ever seen! The first hunting rig that he built was The Public Land Bus which is an incredible setup for big groups and also helps raise awareness for the protection of public lands across the country. More recently Sam built The Public Land Van. The van is a smaller version of the bus and is the mobile hunting rig that a lot of hunters would dream of having! In this episode, Sam and I talk about how he got the idea to build the bus, what our original camping setups were when we started traveling to hunt, and tips for how you can create your own mobile hunting camp!

My friends Larry Helmers, Ben and Keith Robinson have been working together on Larry's 80 acre property for the last four years to improve the wildlife habitat. The property is primarily timber and their management practices have greatly increased the number of animals that live on the property year round. When most whitetail hunters think of "land management" they think of creating food sources like food plots for wildlife. While this can be beneficial in some situations creating cover that is also a food source is a better long term solution to create a higher carrying capacity for wildlife. In this episode, the four of us discuss how they went about managing the timber and how the property went from being an average to below average place to hunt to being an incredible spot with multiple mature bucks, turkeys, and other game species living on it all year!

Kyle Lybarger is a conservationist from Alabama that takes pride in creating and maintaining native ecosystems. In the last year, Kyle has also started creating content to try to help educate folks on how to identify and promote the growth of native plant species on the landscape. In this episode, Kyle and I talk about the importance of native landscapes and how they help wildlife from a land management perspective. As hunters and conservationists we believe it is important to have conversations about the best way to improve the land for future generations of hunters!
