In this episode, Keith and I are talking about the importance of managing timber with our friends Larry, Ben, and Alex. We discuss why fire is an important tool in timber management, how to overcome hurdles that may prevent you from starting timber stand improvement projects, and creating goals for the land you are managing. These guys have done an amazing job making improvements on Larry’s 80 acre property and as a result the hunting opportunities have increased greatly in just 5 years. From a hunting standpoint alone this property went from an average 80 acre parcel to the most attractive buck bedding location in the area! If you or someone you know owns land and wants to reach the goals of better hunting, maximizing timber value, and creating diverse habitat for all local wildlife then this podcast may help get you started!

In this episode, I’ll be discussing hunting the northeast with Izaak Young of Vermont. Izaak spends as much time as he possibly can hunting on snow in multiple states, but he also isn’t afraid to get after it with a bow or on dry ground. What I enjoyed about talking with Izaak was his own unique way of taking advantage of a variety of situations when hunting deer in the northeast. If you hunt in low deer densities in the timber or you're trying to improve your skills hunting in the snow, Izaak will certainly teach you something!

In the last episode, Ben and I discussed some of the changes to our strategy that we planned to make during our annual muzzleloader hunt. As we promised at the end of that episode, we recorded a follow up podcast talking about the results of the hunt. This season is Ben and I's fourth season hunting the hills with a group doing deer drives. What we like the most about this style of hunting is the team aspect and how much we learn doing it. Every time we setup a drive we all experience a different part of the landscape and by sharing what we learn we speed up the learning process. Everything that we learn along the way also helps us for solo hunting throughout all stages of the season. So whether you hunt with a group or only enjoy hunting solo hopefully you can learn from our experiences!

In this episode, I talk with Chris Jenkins about hunting the southern Appalachians. This area has low deer densities and rugged terrain that makes finding mature bucks a unique challenge. Chris has an extremely mobile style that helps him find what he calls “buck pockets” where he focuses his time. Chris spends a ton of time exploring the mountains and uses his woodsman ship to be successful. I really enjoyed talking with Chris and I hope you will learn as much from him as I have!

If you are like us, you often feel unable to relate to hunting shows telling you to hunt food sources in late season as you watch someone hunt over a standing crop field in frigid temperatures. Many hunters don’t hunt in an area that allows them to hunt near destination food sources like that or even in cold weather. So finding a good food source that deer pile into when it gets cold isn’t that easy. We have also found that targeting food sources during the late season isn’t the only way to hunt heavily pressured areas. In this podcast, Aaron and I talk about different situations that we have found mature bucks during late season and what we target to find them. In this episode, Larry and I talk about some of the recent realizations we have had about hunting in hill country. As we learn more about hunting deer in big timber settings we continue to get better at anticipating specific bedding areas. But we often push too far and ultimately spook the deer before we even get a chance to setup on them or stalk them. As last season ended my mission was to do my best to get a better understanding of why we made that mistake and how we could prevent the mistake during the offseason and into this season. After discussing the success and the failure we have had in the last several years we have come up with new strategies for these areas that will hopefully help us stay in the game more often without pushing too far and bumping deer. Larry and I talk about different strategies for both archery and firearm seasons and hopefully you can learn from what we believe has been our biggest mistake when hunting the hills!
